library cupboard buffet
A monumental French early 18th century oak buffet cupboard. Cupboards/Buffets like this were used in castles and large mansions to either store the most valuable spices, linnen etc and keep track of the households finances or to hold the china, linnen and silver for the main dining room. The latter seems to be the case for this piece. As it is very skillfully made with beautiful grained oak it must have been there to be seen by all. It is deep enough to be used as a libray and in very good condition. Interestingly it comes with a alternative center stretcher as seen in the picture without the corniche and plinth. As it is pegged and not glued troughout this piece can be completely dismantled.
