Primitive mountain cupboard
A rare mountain cupboard from the Pyrinees. Pieces like this were made on the countryside in wintertime. When work on the fields seasonally stopped farmers used the materials on their grounds to construct tools and furniture. The way they did this was passed on from generation to generation. As means were limited the oldest way of furnituremaking, from medieval times, lived on. Complete slabs of wood were dovetailed together and reenforced with handforged nails. This resulted in very pure forms. Alltough functionallity was crucial these pieces are almost always beautifully proportioned. And certainly in this case the maker made it beautifull just because he could.
