shell money
Good string of early 20th century shell money or currency from Africa. The shells have a warm patina and are attractively presented on a custom iron base. Its aesthetic appeal was originally conceived to confirm their value and is still strong in a contemporary setting. Shell currency like this was brought back by tradesmen and explorers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as trophies to curiosity cabinets and ethnographic objects.
